| Ben Brown | When it comes to footlball games, the one that older gamers will usually rate as the grandad of them all is sensible soccer. Released by sensible software back in the early 90s, it became an instant hit across the 16 bit computer charts, probably more so remembered as a classic amiga game.
As soon as the title screen pops up you are warped back to those bygone days which includes an excellent rehendition of the old theme tune.
The menu screens are also familar and are very easy to navigate. There are 8 leauge and cup tournaments to plough through as well as friendlies and the ability to also create your own tournaments. There are 50 international football teams to choose from, which I thought was pretty reasonable.
When you start the game you are presented with detailed tactics screen where you can change all the necessary. The ingame graphics themselves look as though they have been stolen straight from the computer versions. Crisp looking cartoon sprites on a clear pitch that goes from top to bottom. Was extremely pleased to see they make a near perfect copy of the game visually. The sounds of the referees whistle is ok and serves its purpose well enough.
Control wise things could have been improved. Although with a joystick and choice of 4 buttons to control (2 for left handed and 2 for righthanded) its all simple enough, I found my players didnt respond quite as well as id hoped. Trying to pass the ball to a players feet usually ended up in the player hoofing the ball upfield in some random direction. Goal kicks, free kicks and corners all seemed to be easy to direct, so no problems there. The heading of the ball was easy but, perhaps, maybe to easy to head the ball into touch far too often. Aftertouch is supported so whilst aiming at the goal, you are able to bend it round the keeper to make them look stupid! After half time, unfortunately, you still dont change ends. This will mean you are constantly playing upfield, which alhough doesnt harm the game to a large extent, was a little disappointed to discover.
All in all though, superb! Fans who remember the original with fond memories will love it. Newcomers may find it frustrating to begin with, but persevere and youll find this is just about the most addictive football sim available for your phone. |

| David Weatherall | Excellent retro classic a+++++. |

| Mark A read | I never understood football games on mobiles, as due to the limits on controls, anything good on today's consoles are just too complex - however this classic is just simple enough to work, and involved enough to entertain.
I used to love sensible world of soccer on my amiga - it used to eat up so much of my time! Probably why pes takes up most of my
Gaming time nowadays.
This isn't as in depth as swos, but I didn't expect it to be - it is what it is however, and that is a faithful rendition of the wonderfully simple, unparalleled and retro gaming engine that made it so popular all those years ago.
I haven't got used to the controls again yet, but thats just me, they are just as simple as they always were, with aftertouch included for ridiculous bendy shots, and just like old times you can send about five players at a time hurling themselves towards the ball for extraordinarily satisfying diving headers.
I can see this one whiling away many a boring bus journey over the coming months. |
