The firmware is the basic OS of the phone.
A newer firmware will eliminate some bugs, update the software (like the mp3-player) and improve the perfomance a bit.
From the Siemens website:
Quote:
Benefits of the latest software version compared to earlier versions:
- SAT update
- Call divert improvement
- New version of CamCorder
- GPRS transmission rate
- Carkit backlight handling
To check the version type in at the mainscreen *#0000#
Or *#06* and than select info.
There is "SVN" and a number shown. It indicates the version of the phones firmware.
The newest one of the SX1 is 14 (and 15 in some regions - but afaik they are the same).
Siemens allows you to update your phone yourself. Can be done with the included data cable.
But you should make a backup of the phones memory before doing it.

The download is about 21 MB.
There is also explained how you update. And be sure, you get the right version!
