Review
of Silent Hill
|
| Robin Shields | A great first mobile version of the silent hill game. Thoroughly compelling and quite scary in parts too boot. Recommended! |
| Joanna Weber | I wouldn't normally review a game I haven't finished, but i've had this one long enough now to form an opinion, even if I haven't completed it.
It's atmospheric, compelling, beautifully styled and very creepy. The storytelling is nice and it does a good job of representing the world of silent hill - even if it is all done as a near-static sequence of sepia pictures on which you just click on whatever it is that you want to activate.
The one massive, fundamental drawback of the game is that it is just too difficult. You often don't know what you're supposed to be doing, and it is hard to see what it is that you're supposed to be activating, but if you just want a taste of silent hill while you're waiting for the bus, you could do worse than this. |
| Christopher Mcguire | The graphics in this game really capture the mood of the console games, but there isn't much of a plot to it; three people are drawn to visit the orphanage where they grew up, and get caught up in a series of horrific supernatural events. Unfortunately, we never find out much about the characters, or anything about why they're at the orphanage. The game ends (rather quickly) with a hint that some of this may be revealed in the sequel.
The player controls the game by moving a "hand" cursor (which automatically switches to a "target" cursor when an enemy is present) around the screen, and pressing an action button. This wouldn't bee so bad if it weren't for the continual back-and-forth you're forced into as you run around the orphanage to solve "puzzles", which really shows up the limitations of this control scheme. Dedicated movement keys or a rearranged level layout with a more linear geographical progression (to match the puzzles) would be an improvement.
Sound is limited to a few notes on the title screen and the occasional sound effect, but I don't find that surprising in a mobile 'phone game.
Overall, I would have to say that you should probably avoid this game unless you're a die-hard silent hill fan like me, and even then you may want to think twice. |
| Jontycampbell | Reviewed on the sony ericsson w850i.
Nice visuals, atmospheric, but becomes dull quickly due to it's ostensibly threadbare, obscure and baffling plot along with its clunky interface.
You end up going round in circles on the same level/floor as you have no idea what your supposed to be doing, who or what you are. It has practically zero back story.
its lack of 'reasonable' adventure realism is almost bloody-minded in the game not allowing you to explore properly, with a 'locked' limited interactivity feel that has you cursing with frustration:
For example, objects that should be interesting turn out to 'do' nothing, like filing cabinets and drawers, or you can examine any window but not look out of it because it is dirty - why not break it? But alas you can't - so 8 for visuals, 4 for the odd spot-effects sound, 3 for playability.
Overall much ado about nothing.
Get gameloft's chessmaster instead, at least it's a 'puzzle' that you can 'solve' and sort of self-adjusts to your skill level.
I rue the day I wasted a fiver on this over-hyped shell of a game! |
| Tracey Smith | Spooky, really addictive, quite difficult! Still havent finished playing it but it is recommended, just be prepared to be scared! |
| Zoltan Papp | It has the silent hill feeling but the ending was bad. I mean there is no ending really... The story isn't complete. |
| Ivo Stunga | Once I surfed around the web and stopped in wikipedia, and caught myself reading about silent hill again. But this time was different - I noticed this article - silent hill mobile or silent hill: orphan. I was wondering - what the heck is it?
Up to this point I had completed every silent hill game, except origins, multiple times. So, I was open-minded to get something experimentally familiar. Of course - soon I found out what this article is about, and purchased this ambitious peace of software for my nokia 6630 while I was at work.
I think, that it is useless to say, how much I wanted my workday to finish as soon as possible, hehe.
Then I was at home finally and started to immerse myself again into the deep universe of silent hill.
1)
The first disappointment was the programming language, used to create this game. Java - very limited stuff, I think. But, widely usable - about in every handset with color screen. Soon I accepted, that java was chosen because of this availability, perhaps, and continued to explore this familiar orphanage where terrible things happened.
2)
I had to get used to the archaic pint-n-click game-play mechanics. But this wasn't a problem. These mechanics took me back to the old days - the beginning of post-golden era of video-gaming - to the nineties, which is a great accomplishment for a modern game.
3)
The only thing I haven't really accepted is the audio in this game. No akira yamaoka. Useless beeps in midi instead. But again - I understood, that this is due to programming language and total size of game (install file weighed 466, 5 kb). Akira's score would just make that size ten times, or even larger - much too much for gprs download, perhaps.
But, I managed to accept all these limitations and soon I was totally in this game.
I enjoyed the classic feel, enjoyed the visuals, which easily could be described as a form of art, I enjoyed puzzles and environments, atmosphere in general. I enjoyed the story too, of course.
And here I first met the controllable shifting to otherworld, which fitted in this game, unlike in silent hill: origins.
In fact - this is the only one in java programmed game for cellphones, which I completed and enjoyed. Guilty pleasure.
This alone can be put as measure of overall quality of this game.
Even more - this edition of silent hill managed to deliver some creeps and chills - amazing achievement, considering the aforementioned limitations.
Yes, I do absolutely recommend this game to every silent hill veteran out there, such as myself. Of course - this isn't the regular, full length silent hill game. But sometimes it is nice to get your hands on that same, well known soul, but with another face. And this surely is the case. |
| Alex Curtis | A point and click adventure. Graphics are ok but not many locations so a lot of traveling back and forth. It's a bit annoying because you need to click everywhere, and sometimes quite accurately or you will miss something. My main frustration was that the puzzles were not particularly logical. For example, use sacks fails. Pick up screwdriver. Use sacks works : "you lie down on them to sleep" .. !! Also, i'm not familiar with the silent hill story, but none of the story was explained even at the end. |
| Philip Edwards | Not quite what I was expecting but still playable. |
| Lisa Heard | Very difficult to complete, had to find some help online. Once finally completed there is nothing else to do. Very good graphics and eerie atmosphere though. |
| Mark a Mckay | I found the controls quite difficult, but I think that was down to my handset, however the graphics will blow your mind, its quite spooky to play but then I guess thats what silent hill fans want, I know I did :). |
| Karen Langford | Love this game!
I wasn't much of a silent hill fan but the layout and puzzle type game concept drew me in. Now i'm tempted to buy the larger games and get into the franchise. The story is freaky and as it unfolds it gets even freakier, even the music got me tense. You don't need to be a silent hill fan to enjoy this game howeveer buy the time you finish this game you might turn into one! Recommended to all horror game fans! |
| Helen Bowman | Brilliant game, needed assistance to complete some parts. Can't wait for a sequel. |
| Nicola Charman | Really enjoyed this game but wouldn't have figured some of it out without the help of a walkthrough. Excellent eerie feel to the game. Overall I would recommend. A good buy. |
| Tobias Rowe | The advanced capabilities of modern mobile phones have begun to allow high quality games to be developed and produced. The nokia n-gage platform is certainly a postive step closer to the industry competing against the portable console industry.
However, even though high end mobile phones are capable of full 3d, konami have not simply ported an existing title in the series. It can be argued that developing a 2d game generates lower development costs but porting an existing title would have been easier and, unfortunately, developers usually take the easiet route.
Thankfully though, konami, whether deliberate or not, have chosen not to do so and silent hill most certainly benefits from being an innovative 2d point and click game rather than a port. Because of this it stands out from the flooded suvival horror market of late.
Silent hill is a traditional point and click game in terms of movement and interaction, however, innovative game mechanics have been included. A simple example of this would be the use of a first-person gun in the form of a cross hair. A more unique example though is the taste mechanic. Not only has it not been done before but it is successful two-fold; it adds to the variety of puzzles and interaction and also adds to the player's feeling of disgust at the mere thought of putting your mouth near anything in the town of silent hill.
The game also distinguishes itself against the casual games market with it's high level of difficult puzzles and extensive environments. However, don't let this discourage you from buying this game, as it is a healthy challenge rather than an infuriating nuisance.
Keeping in line with the existing games in the series, silent hill has the sepia stylised presentation and eerie, highly detailed 2d backgrounds. It's a shame that the same time and effort wasn't spent on the game's title screen---granted, the psychotic doll is a sure-fire underwear filler though.
9/10

| Zoe Dey | Superb, eery, in two different worlds, good puzzle game to keep you brain going. |
| N s Patterson | Different style of gameplay to any adventure game I have tried before but thats not a bad thing. A good horror/mystery game to get the braincells ticking over nicely. Very dark in subject matter but gets the level of difficulty just about right as it gets you thinking without being so ridiculously hard that you want to throw the phone across the room (and theres walkthroughs scattered around on the net if you do get stuck). To be honest, the point and click gameplay style is not gonna be to everyones tastes but I liked it and I think its a decent little game to have in your collection if you're looking for something a little different. I'll definitely be buying the sequel if one comes along. |
| Aaron Johnston | Good if you like old adventure style games like shadowgate, deja vu etc. Creepy story and great locations, even on the lower-graphics phones. |
| Andy Rice | Interesting enough if you like this kind of game, i've discovered however that I don't. |
| j murray | I really enjoyed this. I hate games that are fast finishing and there was enough to keep me entertained and intrigued (and frustrated at times). Only shame in my opinion was quite a week ending. Different and challenging. |
| Gary Orton | This games compramises of walking around a house solving puzzles / riddles. It takes a while to play giving more value for money. Similar in princable to the playstation game. Not a bad game but can get a bit boring if you are stuck on what to do next. 7 / 10. |
| James Poel | Hmm.. Whell I have mixed feelings about this game..
I have only had it for a day... And im struggling, so its definately not lacking in difficulty!
Basically you go around a small house and solve puzzles which mainly consist of using items together, nothing more, nothing less, but its still rather enjoyable. |
| Mark Saunders | Excellant game, something really different and with worthwhile puzzles which are not all that obvious in their execution (in a good way) had to finish it. Best game i've bought yet. |
