Review
of Orcs and Elves
|
| Hubert Lange | Very nice game. Playing this reminded me of the old classic games like eye of the beholder series, wher graphics and effects were not so important as the overall playability. |
| John Foster | Reminds me of a turn based version the old dungeon master and eye of the beholder games (obviously simplified, with only one character that is not customisable). Good old school dungeon trekking, with a limited amount of stratefy during combat. |
| Mathias Haage | A really nice game which I enjoyed from start to finish. |
| Adam Tan | Gameplay for this game was obviously a little restrictive, due to the small screen. However, for anyone looking for a simple rpg game to while away a few hours here and there, this is perfect. If you're looking for something a little more advanced, then a different game platform (like a nintendo ds or sony psp) might be advisable. |
| Ville Huuskonen | After playing doom rpg my first thought was that this is doom rpg with fantasy creatures. Well, it's not far from that, but it's not a bad thing. Game is a bit too easy I think. There's also one very nasty bug on the level where you must collect the hexbreaker. There are different solutions offered to bypass it, but screwing this level will get you seriously stuck in the game, and all you can do is restart.
Graphics are oldish, but it's ok. Sound slow the game too much, so I play quiet. |
| Helen Bowman | Glad I tried this, fun game with puzzles to solve too. |
| H l Carlile | An addictive game this it very playable. If not a little repetative, the unlocking of secrets do make the game replayable. |
| Nicola Charman | I'm playing this game now and really enjoying it. I expected it to be more of a typical classic rpg (should have read reviews!) but it has made a refreshing change. The concept is a little more simple - working your way through uncovered mazes - but you still get to choose the appropriate weapon, build exp, use potions etc. And the best bit - I have yet to finish the game and have played for hours and hours. Def worth the money. |
| Daniel thomas Marley | This is well worth £4. A cool little d&d type game based on the doom rpg engine. It's turn based but you probably wont notice as the pace is nice and fast, there's plenty of cool set pieces, monsters and weapons to kill them with, and a load of secrets. More mobile dvelopers should put this kind of effort in. |
| Ross Boyce | The first fps game I have played on my mobile and I found very enjoyable. Turn based fps battles played well. Plenty of secret locations and weapons add replay value. Recommended. |
| Randall Smith | Terrific game. |
| John Macvie | Graphics are primitive and sound non-existant apart from a little tune that plays as the game is loading. But old time dungeoneers like me will love it. Reminds me very much of dungeon master on the amiga.
Can become addictive :). |
| Bryn Lawrence | Graphics were ok as was the game play , but after a few hours it became very repetitive . Only unlocking all the secrets and trying to clear the levels kept me going . |
| DJFRONTBUM | Kept me entertaind for ages, a bit like old school games like dungeon master. Various weapons upgrades, secret areas, generally a good dungeon hack. Graphics arnt the best gut game play is addictive. |
| Niels Van kekem | Orcs and elves is a very entertaining hack and slash rpg with amusing dialogue and fun gameplay.
The graphics are very good for an phone game aka heretic.
If you're into hack and slash rpg's and have time to spare this is a great choice. |
| Aaron Johnston | Great tile-based first person rpg, like eye of the beholder, wizadry etc. Fairly lengthy for a mobile game and feels quite big-budget. |
| Filip Kania | Easy but nice and long - takes time and really once you start playing it 's difficult to stop. Save option helps but as I said you will forget and have to restart few times same level once get stronger opponent. When I was buying this game I saw the review where someone said that purchasing the weapons and getting experience don't matter - but it does and also it does matter which weapon you using against different monsters as it all getting harder with every level. I like to play rpg games very much and this one really gave me a lot of joy :) also someone said it doesn't matter if you don't explore all the map - it's not gonna help to finish a game - well maybe tru but what is the point of playing game and never finding out what that was behind this door??? Of course after finishing the game you are being ranked and then it all comes back on you: how many rounds you took thru the game, how much damage you got and gave, etc. I would surely recomend this game to all rpg lovers :)

| Mark Saunders | Excellant conversion. Impressed with depth of game and its ability to play on my e250. Good length, still have not finished despite a few car journeys. |
| Joshua Moore | Good game all the way through but as it only has a story mode once its completed thats it and it will leave wanting more but not because you want the second one sequel but because its gameplay life is just too short. |
| michellewellman | I think this game is great, it's user friendly. |
| Ashley Finnie | This is the best mobile game I have ever played. I couldn't put it down. I couldn't wait to be left alone with my phone to continue from where I left off. It's not too complicated, there's not too many things to remember, the controls are really simple, but it's still challenging. The game itself kept me hooked. There's a good little story behind it and secret passages to find. I really hope that they bring out a second one.
Highly recommended. |
| Jamie Darlington | I was impressed by this game from the start, despite its simple appearance and interface it quickly got me hooked. Reminiscant of the old "eye of the beholder" dungeon scrollers it looks like the developers have focused more on the content of the game than the graphics, and they've done such a good job that once you get playing the blocky sprites seem to fade into the background and it all becomes just good fun.
I'm not usually a fan of turn-based games but this one keeps pace brilliantly and with a variety of weapons/potions/armor at your disposal as well as an in-game shop system to buy and sell your adventure-gotten gains this looks to keep me occupied for hours on end.
It has a handy save feature from anywhere in the given dungeon level which means you can pick up and play for 5 minutes waiting for a bus/train/late girlfriend and carry on later.
I'm looking forward to seeing what future games this one spawns, as it seems to have taken the mobile world by storm having been written by the creator of the pc series "doom" and "quake" who is now trying his hand at a more challenging platform, the mobile java midp one.
All in all it's a fun experience that'll keep you interested for hours, and is easy enough to pick up even if you're not a hardened rpg fan. 7/10. |
| Neel Patel | Was a bit easy. Completed it fairly quickly. |
| Ben Powles | Great rpg - but too easy. Too many potions around and once you have the good weapons pretty easy to kill the monsters. |
| James Thirtle | This game is a real triumph of good game design over technical needs. It harks back to the games I used to play 15 years ago - when rpgs were turn based, and environments were simple, and repetitive. But if you remember the fun of playing those old amiga rpgs, you'll know that just because a game is a little clunky by modern pc standards, doesn't mean it isn't a lot of fun.
The game isn't perfect, however - one of the reasons we play rgps is for the pleasure of 'levelling up' - getting more powerful over the course of the game. You do level up in this game, but it doesn't have as much impact on game-play as you might like... You don't *feel* all that more powerful at the end of the game than at the beginning... The monsters you meet still generally die in about three hits, you have more weapons but they don't change things all that much.
Secondly, there's not a great sense of exploration, unlike in a good rgp. It's linear, as you might expect, but also feels a little cramped.
Both these points could have been fixed with *better* game design, but it's still a very enjoyable game to play, and you may find yourself *wanting* to get on with playing it, rather than only taking your phone out when there's nothing else to do. I finished it, start to finish, in a week, and i'd say that's probably average. It probably pays one more play through, but not more than that.
Really, this is a very good game, but I still think there's even further to go in good game design for the current technology. |
| Jeff Brewer | Good game, - but the demo on id's site seems more real time than turn based, so I was a bit let down by that. Apart from that, I found it to be a good length, and it held my interest throughout - looking forward to the proposed sequel. |
| Richard Foster | I really quite enjoye this game, it is longer than all the other dungeon hack and slash games I have found for the mobile, but could still do with an extra couple of levels. Controls are nice and easy. Hope they do a follow up to this game.

| Claude Matteau | A nice game! You explore a dungeon and fight against many monsters. A lot of hidden secrets. And if you drink some beer to improve your statut, watch the bubbles on your screen! |
| Adrian Bruder | Good game, recommended. |
| Andy Parsons | If you enjoyed the doom rpg mobile game then you will love this! Its similar in many ways and is great for us with big thumbs and bad reactions. Great time filler. |
| Kakin Wan | The graphic are poor, gameplay is easy but quite long to finish it. The sounds are pretty dull... When you hit the monsters it always the same sound even if you use magic. Would recommend to all of you who loves the old rpg! |
| Toby Reeve | Very enjoyable game.. Is big and has lots of replay value.. Does get very hard towards the end though. |
| Angela Jenner | Not played this format before but it is easy to play and instructions easy to follow. |
| James Poel | Maybe not as good as doom, but its a very suave game! I like the way the characters seam to move in this one, rather than just dissapearing in doom though :). |
| Michael Hinshelwood | Great fun. It's like playing an old amiga rpg on your phone. |
| A Archer | This has to be one of the best if not the best game I have downloaded in a while highly recommended! |
| Kerry Mulvey | Fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed this game, great graphics and great story line, could have gone on for ever for me. |
