Review of
Wolfenstein RPG 6300 |
| Sander Van leth | After playing orcs and elves and doom rpg, this game's spiritual predecessors, I didn't have to think long before bought this game.
Like in the game's older pc brothers, you take the role of soldier b. J. Blazkovich, who infiltrates among the ranks of the evil axis trying to kill them from within. When b. J. Uncovers an ancient catacomb, he realises he's got a lot more to deal with this time around.
Graphics:
For the graphics, id decided to use the visual style of the later wolfenstein games, probably to make it look more like the upcoming installment. Although I would've prefered the original style of the 1992 classic, the graphics grew on me quickly. Enemies are nicely detailed, but the environments feel a bit bland. Thankfully there are enough props around to fill up the rooms, which makes up for the blandness. The lighting helps a lot too, giving the game a dark, moody look. The 3d engine handles itself well, and even has height differences this time around, where the camera looks up or down the slopes depending on where you stand. There are even outdoor segments, and the game switches between them flawlessly.
Sound:
Fans of the old wolf3d and other id games probably remember bobby prince's work on those games and it's great to hear his work in this game as well. If you've played the original you'll hear a lot of recognisable sounds, most noticable the intro theme and the sound when you pick something up.
The only thing that bugs me is unfortunately a big one, and that's the sound the guns make. They sound like star trek phasers and to make matters worse, my mobile has trouble parsing the sound which makes my ears pop every time someone shoots. So sorry bobby, i'm playing this one with the sound off.
Gameplay:
I've always loved how id converted an fps game in this rpg sauce. It gives a fresh feel to the game while also remaining true to it's heritage. The touch controls are adequate and the only gripe I have with them is that you can't click on an enemy to shoot it, or click on a switch to activate it. It's only a minor flaw that can be easily overlooked, though.
The weapons are diverse and fun to use. Sticking a stick of dynamite on an enemy and legging it certainly has its charms! There's also a sniper rifle in this game as well as syringes with fluids you can mix together yourself, enriching the experience even further.
New in this game are strafing and underwater segments. Strafing works (on my lg that is) by tracing a line from the centre of your screen to either the left or the right side of the screen. This was tricky to pull off with the lg's stylus, so I used my thumb, which made it a lot more responsive. The underwater segments are nicely done and require some thought , since you can only stay submerged for only 10 turns, unless you get out of the water, or find air bubbles as a sort of checkpoint underwater.
Story:
The game's narrative, bland and simple as it may be, has some charm to it. Cutscenes make use of a moving camera and have some nice moments (which i'm not going to spoil), and you can also interrogate certain npc's by beating the snot out of them with your fists and later, your brass knuckles.
Replay:
There's a lot to do in wolfrpg, much like in doom there are a lot of hidden areas to uncover, books to read (that give you buffs or even debuffs), enemies to kill and areas to explore that will keep the die hard gamer entertained until he reaches that coveted 100% rating.
There are also two minigames. One's a gambling game, which is basically like higher/lower, where the player who picked the highest playing card wins. There's also chicken kicking (chickens are a central theme in the game, don't ask me why), where you have to kick a chicken (yes, really) into a fiery pit. The closer you get to the centre of the pit, the more points you get.
Overall (the short version):
Wolfrpg is a great continuation of id's rpg series which fans of doomrpg and/or orc's and elves will undoubtably love. Lots to do, great weapons, not so great sounds but hey: a game with this much content can live without sfx. |
| Adrian Jackson | After a couple of forays into the world of fantasy with the orcs and elves titles, this first person rpg engine has returned to its roots with a wolfenstein 3d themed game. And it's a great one. Just about every complaint i've had with the games based on this engine has been addressed.
If you've somehow missed out on the earlier titles this game is based on, what we have here is a first person game that's more rpg than shooter. Movement is turn based - enemies move at the same pace you do, allowing you to think through each move before taking it. As well as gaining increasingly powerful weapons as the game goes on, your character levels up and increases their ability through stats.
The game itself is set in world war ii, with the player taking on the role of a us soldier taking on the might of the nazis single-handed - as well as a host of supernatural creatures.
This time round, gameplay is a mixture of straightforward combat with a range of german enemies and inspired set pieces which are almost closer to puzzles than battles. Gone are the boss battles which simply rely on how much ammo and healing equipment you've amassed - some of the more impressive fights in this one require you to carefully think through your approach and may need several attempts to get right.
Graphics, sound, level design, learning curve, weapon selection - almost everything is perfectly tuned in this game. And with a series of awards for finding secret areas, destroying nazi insignias, defeating enemies and the suchlike, there's a whole load of replay value.
If you're looking for an entertaining rpg for your mobile, then this is by far the best thing out there. If you enjoyed doom rpg, or the orcs and elves titles, then you should buy this now. Right this second. |
| Joanna Lapsley | Being turn based makes it ideal for the touch screen phone. Gave me hours of entertainment and I still haven't found all the secret rooms. Good selection of weapons and monsters and an enjoyable storyline. |
