Review of
Silent Hill |
| Christopher Mcguire | The graphics in this game really capture the mood of the console games, but there isn't much of a plot to it; three people are drawn to visit the orphanage where they grew up, and get caught up in a series of horrific supernatural events. Unfortunately, we never find out much about the characters, or anything about why they're at the orphanage. The game ends (rather quickly) with a hint that some of this may be revealed in the sequel.
The player controls the game by moving a "hand" cursor (which automatically switches to a "target" cursor when an enemy is present) around the screen, and pressing an action button. This wouldn't bee so bad if it weren't for the continual back-and-forth you're forced into as you run around the orphanage to solve "puzzles", which really shows up the limitations of this control scheme. Dedicated movement keys or a rearranged level layout with a more linear geographical progression (to match the puzzles) would be an improvement.
Sound is limited to a few notes on the title screen and the occasional sound effect, but I don't find that surprising in a mobile 'phone game.
Overall, I would have to say that you should probably avoid this game unless you're a die-hard silent hill fan like me, and even then you may want to think twice. |
| Joanna Weber | I wouldn't normally review a game I haven't finished, but i've had this one long enough now to form an opinion, even if I haven't completed it.
It's atmospheric, compelling, beautifully styled and very creepy. The storytelling is nice and it does a good job of representing the world of silent hill - even if it is all done as a near-static sequence of sepia pictures on which you just click on whatever it is that you want to activate.
The one massive, fundamental drawback of the game is that it is just too difficult. You often don't know what you're supposed to be doing, and it is hard to see what it is that you're supposed to be activating, but if you just want a taste of silent hill while you're waiting for the bus, you could do worse than this. |
| Tracey Smith | Spooky, really addictive, quite difficult! Still havent finished playing it but it is recommended, just be prepared to be scared! |
