Review of
Orcs and Elves 5500 |
| James Thirtle | This game is a real triumph of good game design over technical needs. It harks back to the games I used to play 15 years ago - when rpgs were turn based, and environments were simple, and repetitive. But if you remember the fun of playing those old amiga rpgs, you'll know that just because a game is a little clunky by modern pc standards, doesn't mean it isn't a lot of fun.
The game isn't perfect, however - one of the reasons we play rgps is for the pleasure of 'levelling up' - getting more powerful over the course of the game. You do level up in this game, but it doesn't have as much impact on game-play as you might like... You don't *feel* all that more powerful at the end of the game than at the beginning... The monsters you meet still generally die in about three hits, you have more weapons but they don't change things all that much.
Secondly, there's not a great sense of exploration, unlike in a good rgp. It's linear, as you might expect, but also feels a little cramped.
Both these points could have been fixed with *better* game design, but it's still a very enjoyable game to play, and you may find yourself *wanting* to get on with playing it, rather than only taking your phone out when there's nothing else to do. I finished it, start to finish, in a week, and i'd say that's probably average. It probably pays one more play through, but not more than that.
Really, this is a very good game, but I still think there's even further to go in good game design for the current technology. |
| Hubert Lange | Very nice game. Playing this reminded me of the old classic games like eye of the beholder series, wher graphics and effects were not so important as the overall playability. |
| Nicola Charman | I'm playing this game now and really enjoying it. I expected it to be more of a typical classic rpg (should have read reviews!) but it has made a refreshing change. The concept is a little more simple - working your way through uncovered mazes - but you still get to choose the appropriate weapon, build exp, use potions etc. And the best bit - I have yet to finish the game and have played for hours and hours. Def worth the money. |
