Review of
California Games 6021

| Michael Rice | California games is very good compilation of 6 games. The half pipe, footbag and surfing are ace! Skating, bmx and flying disc are ok. The controles on the game work well. The graphics are good. The sound is ok. Overall this is a good buy. |
| Mark Johnson | California games, a title that takes me back to when I was 11 and had a commodore amiga 500. I still remember the colour of the disks that had to go into a 3.5" floppy drive, and that there were two of them. I'm disappointed that it doesn't amaze me that you can fit the same game (with better graphics) onto a mobile phone!
All the features are there, and apart from spanglier graphics and less sponsors, the game is identical to that I played on the amiga all those years ago.
You can play one, or some or all of 6 events that come under the 'california' banner. (these days they'd probably be called extreme sports) these games are: half pipe (skateboarding), foot bag (keepie uppie with a bean bag), surfing, skating (roller skating), bmx and flying disc (frisbee).
Each event has its own particular controls, which is perhaps the only downside as heavy help file usage is required, but this is no worse than other d500 games I have played. Besides which, having played an earlier version, it all came back to me very quickly. The gameplay is spot on for a phone, and is certainly a lot less annoying than other 'action' phone games. The sound is restricted to music on the menu as with other d500 games, but to my mind this doesn't detract from the whole experience, especially if you are playing when you are supposed to be working!
As mentioned before the graphics are excellent for a phone, and superior to my old amiga classic back in the day. The backgrounds are not fussy but detailed enough, even down to the seagull you can hit with the beanbag! My d500 has a very early firmware version, and I have found crashing issues with other games, but not with this one.
For bringing back my wasted youth, making the game better and putting it on a phone, I award 8 out of ten. Marks only lost to the control learning curve, and that I find bmx a little overly hard... But thats probably just me!
Other than that, well worth a purchase in my humble opinion! |
| Adam Hepton | An excellent representation of a classic. The revised layout of the sony ericsson action button works well generally across the board, although on some events the traditional keypad method of control suits better.
Half pipe is very good - easy to enjoy, but devilish to master. Using either control pad or key pad on this event works equally as well.
Footbag (always my favourite event) works surprisingly well, although the background is a little cluttered and clashes with your character's attire. Controls work well in both ways for this one.
I've never understood the surfing one: I always fall off. This is definitely easier with the keys rather than the control stick, though.
Skating is great as it always was. It's difficult to control with either method, though: using the control stick results in accidental presses of the button, meaning you jump when you don't want to, and the key pad makes it very difficult to do everything at once. Still, once you get round these nuances, a great rendition.
Bmx suffers from the same problems control-wise as skating, but is still lots and lots of fun once you get to grips with it.
Flying disc was always the worst event, and this is no different here, although there are no control issues at all.
All in all, a great package, full of fun and will keep you coming back for more. Graphically, it's closer to the megadrive/genesis version than the c64 although sonically it's a little lacking, with only a few spot effects rather than the moody soundtrack of the original. |
