| Anthony Punshon | I bought crash nitro kart on an older phone, and for sheer enjoyment and longevity, it’s a great game that does everything right. And as a sequel, this version certainly doesn’t disappoint!
There’s really not much wrong with this game, and ‘wrong’ might even be too strong a word as their more like potential oversights that could have enhanced the experience. So that in mind, let’s dispense with the negatives first to get them out of the way.
First thing I noticed after a few races is the lack of backdrops. The original nitro had objects on the side of the road giving a feel of being in different environments. Palm trees for a beachy/hawaiian feel, for example. However this one, there’s nothing like that. The sides of the road are completely clear and the only thing distinguishing one environment from the next is a different colour scheme. This can make you feel like you’re just racing around the same old tracks over and over again.
One thing I also think is missing that would enhance the game considerably is a bird’s eye view representation of the track showing coloured dots to represent where the other racers are. If you’re racing away in pole position, you have no idea if someone is on your tail or 15 seconds behind you. This can really get rid of the ‘race’ feeling of the game as you feel like you’re just navigating the road and its obstacles with no feeling of competition. No jostling for position. No using power-ups on other drivers, etc.
If there was a way like this to see where the other drivers were, you could either feel the heat of knowing someone is right on your tail waiting for you to slip up, or you could be motivated by putting even more distance between you and the next guy. As it happens this one oversight at times can make for a very lonely gaming experience!
However, those things out of the way, this is a great game overall!
It has tonnes of race options (literally tonnes!) including a quick race option which will pick a driver, cart, and track at random and you’re good to go. This is great for when you’re out shopping and the missus is heading for the changing rooms to try something on, etc. (the game itself is also very quick loading which is always a plus).
You also have to complete different race options and tasks to unlock different drivers and carts, for example, collecting whoompas in arcade mode, or completing the tournaments or sudden death mode, etc. Adding to the long term potential of this game.
There’s also the inclusion of monster truck mode where the sole intention is to drive around in your monster truck and crush as many other racers as possible!
So in terms of longevity this game is great for short goes to kill time, or full on gaming periods.
This game gets two thumbs up from me, and if I could, i’d give it three! A great way to spend a couple of quid. |
