Another World - Review

Another World
Title: Another World
Reviewer: David Wagner
Developer: Magic Productions

Going from memory, this looks and feels identical to the version I played many moons ago.

After you pass the usual game menu fluff, it launches straight into the glorious cinematic intro for the game. Talking of which: top tip of the day - if you are using a particle accelerator in your day to day business, dont sit your desk next to the collision zone.

The cinematic style of the game was revolutionary on computers and consoles of the day, and I think it translates very well to mobile. Playing this game feels like a film, with many film style cut sequences as you go along.

Thats not to say there is no gaming action - there is plenty of that. Although be warned, this game is hard. None of your namby pamby oh-i-lost-some-energy cushioning here. If you are shredded by a scary black monster, you are dead. Better luck next time, hero...

In terms of graphics, they are all made up from simple lines and filled shapes, which may initially seem a little stark when compared to some of the pretty, colourful mobile games out there. however, you soon forget this as the fluid motions of the characters and scenes in the game wash over you and takes you to, ahem, another world. Oh, come on, you knew I would have to use that pun at least once...

Interestingly, the game can be played with a vertical screen or in widescreen. A vertical screen gives you a slightly narrower view of the world. Widescreen is more interesting as it rotates the game screen so that you have to hold the phone sideways. On a nokia 6680 this is actually quite a pleasant way to play, and the phone feels more like a game pad. One thing that is missing from this mode is the ability to flip the screen for left-handed players.

For saving your progress, the game uses a series of codes handed out when you die. Although it is quite irksome having to write these down, or memorise them, it does mean that lists are likely to become available on the net so you can skip some of the trickier parts of the game if you wish.

All in all, both a wonderful slice of nostalgia and a beautiful mobile game that is out of this world... Download the demo and become entranced.

Overall 9/10

Star Trek - The Cold Enemy game review

Star Trek - The Cold Enemy

Klingons have gained control of the Starship Enterprise in this arcade platform blast em up. It is your job to overthrow their evil plot and regain control of the ship so you can continue your quest through the galaxy. Dont run away screaming just yet, if your not a huge fan of the Star Trek phenomina, anyone whos a fan of great arcade games should read on!

The game puts you in control of Scotty, one of the original series more colour characters. With help from Captain Kirk and Spock you must deactivate the Klingon defences and fight your way back onto the ship whilst blasting your way past henchmen and alien droids, all hell bent on stoppin you in your tracks.

As arcade games go on your mobile, this is a real treat. All the usual platform favorites are in place, lifts, teleports and large caverns to fall down with miss timed jumps. As the game starts you hear an excellent version of the Original Star Trek theme, and a nice starscape backs a clear crisp and easy to use menu, presentation wise this game gets a thumbs up.

Each level has been cunningly designed and as you progress throught the game, each one will have its own specific mission to complete, the ultimate aim, of course, is finding your way to the exit. Variety plays a key part, each levels design is unique in its own way, furthermore, the design is non linear so you are able to free roam around and explore. In general, you will have to plough through the game with your trusty phaser taking out the Klingon menace and their droid sidekicks. Some missions include deactivating generators that are scattered about so you can progress further into the level, some will require the use of door codes to access and block certain areas of the game, whilst other levels are a straight forward blast from A to B. To aid you there is a map function so you can gauge your progress.

In game graphics are polished and instantly recognisable. As you battle your way through the games fiendish design, the action stays smooth and youre never taken by suprise or put in impossible situations as the enemies fire is clear to see. Nice touches include your commerades battling against the odds in the background, phasers set to stun! Audio FX are, as with most mobile titles are simple yet functional and work well in this game. Controls are excellently realised and even though youre forced to sometimes switch between joystick and keypad, its highly intuative and simple to master.

I have no qualms with recommending Star Trek to anybody. Controls are a breeze to use, graphics are highly polished and level design is well throughtout. I would imagine some folk will perhaps find it an easy mission, but for us mere mortals it provides a long lasting challenge and will be a game you return to for a quick blast until youve defeated every last enemy.
