2005 Real Football for the mobile is a complete winner |

|

Well it has arrived. We think this game is awesome, jaw-droppingly awesome.
Find 2005 Real Football game for your phone model
REVIEW:
The gameplay is second to none in Real Football 2005. Sure, I didnt know the rules too well, but within a couple of minutes, I was kicking goals like the next Ronaldo. The controls are relatively simple; 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9 to run (with an isometric view, you need to be able to run in the right directions), 5 to pass the ball and 0 to shoot. The shooting system is quite ingenious, well thought out at least. Players run towards the goal, and as they get closer, a little meter at the bottom of the screen fills up. This measures the chance of getting the shot in, and if when you press 0 the arrow is on a section thats grey, the shot will miss. If in an orange section, your shot has a good shot of going in, providing the goalie isnt in the way. Its a good system, and is more than just a matter of chance.
The passing system is also very smooth. An arrow highlights your nearest available player and passing is a matter of looking torward to a player of your team (or the opposing team if youre feeling silly), and pressing 5. The game itself is also smooth, and only slows down at areas of congestion, or when the ball is passed a long distance. On the whole though, a trained reviewer such as myself (heh) can really tell that Gameloft has put in a ton of effort into ensuring a good experience for everyone.
The graphics in the game are pretty impressive, and are as much as anyone could expect from the still infant mobile platform. As previously explained, the game is based on an isometric view, which was probably the wisest choice at this stage. The character models, and the shadowing in particular are great, and the whole colourful design of the game works really nicely. The sound is also really good, although I wouldve liked some music to accompany my smooth moves. The short sound effects are all here, and some short music for different events as well. Nothing spectacular is on offer, but the sound is on par with the high standards of the rest of the game.
Probably the most deserving Mobile Games Award Ive ever had the pleasure of dishing out, 2005 Real Football is just all around a great game. Polished to the finest degree, every part of the game just left my jaw dropping. This is the type of game youll be playing for hours on end. |

Robin Hood - Defender of the Crown - Review |

Robin Hood - The Defender of the Crown
Developed by Cinemaware/Digital Bridges
Review date: 24/07/2005
Reviewer: Ben
Well this strategy title is a right blast from the past and no mistake. It originally appeared on 16bit computers in the late 80s to critical acclaim. Cinemaware were the folk responsible for the realease, their titles always gleamed with the professional touch and are still fondly remembered today.
object is to take command of an army and defeat 6 other knights in england, by raiding each county and capturing castles to earn your crown as king.
Anyone familiar with the original will be pleased by this games look and feel. All the opening screens are familiar, giving the game a great ye olden atmosphere and are crafted with nice detail. The music that blasts throughout is an almost perfect copy of the excellent original but like most mobile titles, can thankfully be switched off. Visually the game is basic but without looking bad. The map of england and its castles are all well drawn as are the interminent sub games that pop up from time to time. Much of the game is menu based and its all pretty simple enough to find your way around.
The idea is to build up an army, consisting of soldiers, archers, knights and catapaults. Revenue to build your all conquering force is generated by either owning land (counties) or by going on a night raid to an enemy castle. The winner is the one to have amassed the larger army, defeated the last knight and of course rescued Maid Marrion. Its a simple turn based affair, income made is used in exchange for a bigger and better army from which you can attack enemy outposts and castles. Battles themselves are hardly nailbiting but strategy is needed if youre to outwit your enemy. Should the enemies forces outnumber you, tactics such as standing firm or launching missiles will need to be pulled into play if youre to walk away victorious. In order to break up the hard slog of battle, you can also invite the other knights to jousting tournaments, with these you can play for occupied land or for fame and glory.
There are really only 3 sub games on offer. In order to attack the castle you must have a catapault to break down the walls. Jousting consists of aiming the lance so as to take out the oponnents, over very quickly, blink and you miss it! Finally, raiding and rescue missions take place on a side view style hack em up. All the games are extremely basic, barely requiring little more than holding down or bashing a button but they are nice deviations from the main strategy element.
When this game first came out it had a huge cult following. The conversion is near flawless and im sure it will gain some new fans, despite its simplicity. Whilst it looks pleasant and plays well enough, i perhaps feel this game will be beaten too quickly on all but the hardest difficulty setting. There is a high score table to keep you comming back but unfortunately little else. Strategy game fans new to DOTC should not hesitate in giving this game a bash, same applies for those who have fond nostalgic memories from long ago.

Nokia 6680 hits the UK market and is good for games |
|
|
|
The much awaited 6680 promises to bring 3G well and truly into the mainstream for Nokia, but can the new multitasking phone offer you multitasking options. We look and find out.
Ive been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Nokia 6680 for quite some time. You see, Im one of the many people to be more than a little disappointed with the 6630 – Nokias first UK 3G offering. It was riddled with bugs from the outset and even after many software updates, failed to live up to most expectations. Enter the 6680, a sleeker, more business-like descendant, running on basically the same principles but with a few nifty improvements.
We have been playing games from our selection of Nokia 6680 Games and first impressions are excellent. The screen is bright and the shape is good in the hand.
It looks so much better than the 6630. A more square shape to the design instantly makes it look like a professionals tool, rather than the slightly gimmicky pear-shape of its predecessor. The keypad, despite still being a little small, doesnt have that slightly odd upwards curve to it. So its easier to use and just feels better in your hand.
The first major and noticeable improvement is a forward facing camera in addition to the 1.3 megapixel main imaging unit at the rear. So now, you can video call without having to buy an additional cradle (or developing a nasty RSI in the wrist from trying to flip the 6630 round to see and be seen!). The rear camera is also protected by an active slide, which, I discovered after taking numerous candid images of the inside of my jacket pocket, remains active even when the keypad is locked. It may be useful for getting to the camera function quickly, but the option to turn it off would be helpful. Theres the addition of a flash and at short range, its actually quite effective. Another nice enhancement to the camera is the ability to change the white balance – surely one of the best things about digital photography and a rare feature on a camera phone up to now.
The video calling function also has a new element – the ability to share video clips during a call, so all those embarrassing fall over in pub moments can be shared immediately with your mates. Or is that just me?
Nokia are most proud of the XpressPrint feature which lets you print your images directly on any PictBridge-enabled printer (Bluetooth even means you can do this wirelessly!) and as long as youre not expecting to put your photos on a billboard, the quality is actually pretty good.
Get past the printing aspects and another new element that is likely to appeal to the office boys is the active standby screen. This resembles a miniature PC desktop, with shortcuts to your favourite applications in addition to the customisable soft keys.
There are also some neat little applications bundled with the phone (although this may depend on your network). Theres QuickOffice to view Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and a comprehensive suite of imaging and video editing applications.
The requisite messaging and multimedia functions are here too and, as always, are straightforward to set up and operate. [/imgr] |

Colin Mcrae Rally 2005 - Review |
|
|
|
Colin Mcrae Rally 2005
Developed by Codemasters/Digital Bridges
Review date: 02/07/05
Reviewer: Ben
The former World Rally Champion Colin Mcrae arrives on your mobile for its second outing. The franchise started way back in the late 90s on Pc and Playstation and, Since then, the series has evolved to be one of the best known racing sims across any platfrom.
The game puts you behind the wheel of a Subaru Impreza and takes place over 4 countries comprising of 6 stages of the WRC. There are single races and also a (non bluetooth) 2 player mode to choose from. The option to set the car to auto acceleration is generally a good idea as it saves a little wear and tear on the thumbs.
Presentation is servicable. A pleasant tune accompanies the black and white menues, which are easy to read and navigate, just a little bit dull to look at. All the action revolves around the championship, here you must use all your concentration and finish each stage in the fastest possible time against 6 computer controlled competitors.
The graphics steal the show in this game. Your well crafted car flies around the circuit in impressive detail, flames lick from its exhaust and clouds of dust fly out from under the wheels as you accelerate and slide round corners. The backdrops are nicely drawn and all the usual road side obstacles are present including trees, boulders and traffic cones. The roads undulate nicely and you may ocassionally find your body swerving into the corners along with your car. Certain stages also include weather conditions, so in Britain, for example, you'll be driving in the rain and in Sweden you'll battle against the snow and ice. Above all, the game shifts along at a cracking pace.
In game audio, however, is very sparse. The starter wil count you down and then you just go zooming off in silence. When your car hits a corner you do finally get to hear some tyres squeeling.
Control of your rally car is about as simple as youd expect from a racing game, left, right, brake and handbrake. Your going to need to master the use of handbrake if your to shave precious seconds off your total stage time. The car responded pretty well to being steered around corners, although it does take a few games to get the feel for the tracks. I also thought the collision detection left a lot to be desired on ocassion. Blatantly missing a roadside object can easily get your car grinding to a halt. As an extra challenge, the designers have also included an in-car viewpoint, selectable at the start of each race. This certainly gives the game a new dimension but its extremely tricky to master. Your onscreen display shows how much of a pounding you've put your car through, also your speedometer and time. I found them well placed, easy to read and highly useful. At the end of each stage you are given an hour to do any running repairs. Failure to get your vehicle patched up will result in adverse handling in the next race, so bewarned, dont forget!
I found myself quite enjoying this title and the more you practice the better the game gets. Podium finishes reward you by unlocking new levels for the other game modes. If your not a fan of rally racing, i dont think this game will change your opinion. You're not racing against anyone except the clock and i presume this will put off some people who prefer to jostle for postion on the track. There are a couple of minor flaws with this game but, on the whole, I think there is quite a lasting challenge with Colin Mcrae Rally. It handles pretty well, looks good and provides plenty of replay value.

Sensible Soccer - Review |
|
|
|
Sensible Soccer - a classic remake for mobiles from the old Amiga days has proved a huge hit. This is the review from one of our customers who wrote such a good review he won Best Review for June.
REVIEW:
When it comes to footlball games, the one that older gamers will usually rate as the grandad of them all is sensible soccer. released by sensible software back in the early 90s, it became an instant hit across the 16 bit computer charts, probably more so remembered as a classic amiga game.
as soon as the title screen pops up you are warped back to those bygone days which includes an excellent rehendition of the old theme tune.
the menu screens are also familar and are very easy to navigate. there are 8 leauge and cup tournaments to plough through as well as friendlies and the ability to also create your own tournaments. there are 50 international football teams to choose from, which i thought was pretty reasonable.
when you start the game you are presented with detailed tactics screen where you can change all the necessary. the ingame graphics themselves look as though they have been stolen straight from the computer versions. crisp looking cartoon sprites on a clear pitch that goes from top to bottom. was extremely pleased to see they make a near perfect copy of the game visually. the sounds of the referees whistle is ok and serves its purpose well enough.
control wise things could have been improved. although with a joystick and choice of 4 buttons to control (2 for left handed and 2 for righthanded) its all simple enough, i found my players didnt respond quite as well as id hoped. trying to pass the ball to a players feet usually ended up in the player hoofing the ball upfield in some random direction. goal kicks, free kicks and corners all seemed to be easy to direct, so no problems there. the heading of the ball was easy but, perhaps, maybe to easy to head the ball into touch far too often. aftertouch is supported so whilst aiming at the goal, you are able to bend it round the keeper to make them look stupid! after half time, unfortunately, you still dont change ends. this will mean you are constantly playing upfield, which alhough doesnt harm the game to a large extent, was a little disappointed to discover.
all in all though, superb! fans who remember the original with fond memories will love it. newcomers may find it frustrating to begin with, but persevere and youll find this is just about the most addictive football sim available for your phone. |

War of the Worlds on Mobile - Review |
|
|
|
Find War of the Worlds mobile game for your phone model.
Developed by Gameloft
Review date: 10/07/2005
Reviewer: Ben
This game is based on Steven Spielbergs remake of the classic novel by H.G. Wells, the story of the human race versus the menace of an alien tripod invasion of earth.
Most movie tie in games fail badly, lets be honest. The potential is always there for a great action game but, ultimately, they normally consist of several poorly realised sub games merged into one based on the more memorable scenes from the film. Where others have failed, War of the Worlds pulls off with relative ease.
It doesnt pretend to put you in the film but instead captures the mood and gives you straight forward side scrolling blast em up action. Unusually, your not playing the part of the good guys, instead your in charge of the alien tripods, which makes a refreshing change.
As soon as the game starts youre pulled into the atmosphere. The title tune is simple, catchy and atmospheric and the lightening effects give the game a dark and sinister feel. All the options on the menu are well laid out and easy to change. There are 3 skill levels to choose from and a high score table which adds to the games lastability.
Whilst experienced gamers may find themselves ploughing through the game quickly on easy setting, on the hardest skill level youll find it gives you quite a rough time. The game will auto save your progress as you complete each level, this means your able to restart from the last undefeated level each time you pick the game up for a quick blast.
To set the tone for each stage of the game, a female newsreader will describe the latest events of the day. Although the information reported will have little bearing on how you play the game, it does give you the impetus to carry on and discover what happens next.
The first time your character emerges on screen youll be impressed. The animation of the Tripod marching down the streets and rivers is sublime. Its tenticles sway around majestically and nice touches of detail include splashes around its feet as it stomps through the water. Enemies that are thrown at you include helecopters, tanks and mines, all of which are well designed and give the game a nice scope of size and scale.
The backgrounds are well drawn, the dark skies even scroll in parallax and always run along nice and smoothly, no matter how much is happening on screen. Soundwise, the effects are crisp and add to the games atmosphere.
The object of the game is to reach the end of each stage in one piece and defeat the obligatory end of level gaurdian within a strict time limit. Destroyed enemies will leave behind a selection of power ups to aid your mission, including smart bombs, extra health and time bonuses. Buses and buildings, when attacked, will leave tiny folk scrambling for cover, these can grabbed by your tripod and absorbed for even more bonuses. Most land based objects can be picked up and thrown as well, giving the game a little extra depth. End of level bosses will have certain weak spots which you must attack in order to defeat, generally they will be obvious but not in all cases.
Movement of your tripod couldnt be easier to grasp. Left and right moves him back and forth along the bottom of the screen and attacks are made by moving up and down to target your crosshairs at the enemy.
The controls are responsive and fluid, they need to be to fend off wave after wave of relentless hostility.
There is no shortage of games in this genre but War of the Worlds holds it own superbly and it appears a lot of thought has gone into this games design. Its quirky enough to keep you addicted and the overall feeling is that this game is polished and well suited to mobile gaming. Whilst the execution of the game is superb, it does have one significant drawback. Levels are fairly repetitive as are variation in gameplay and attack waves. The early levels may have you thinking youll have the game beaten inside a day, dont be fooled though as it becomes quite a tough challenge in the later stages.

Duke Nukem to hit mobiles |
|
|
|
SkyZone Entertainment today announced that Duke Nukem Mobile 3D now has a release date of this summer. The game is currently being developed for BREW-enabled handsets by MachineWorks Northwest, which previously brought Duke Nukem to the Tapwave Zodiac.
Duke Nukem is a first-person shooter based in a bizarre world of dungeons, strip clubs, and giant airships. The game will come with an option to turn the enemies into sprite-based images, upping the games frame rate.
This is the second mobile version of Duke Nukem available, as Duke Nukem Mobile (sans the 3D) was released in 2004 by SK Media and MachineWorks. The PC game Duke Nukem Forever was supposed to come out many years ago but has since gone missing in action, and its release date remains to be determined. |
